Handmade Natural Toothpaste

I started making my own toothpaste less then a year ago (thanks to Andreea O’Brien who first post her simple recipe in her healthy page) after discovering a few ingredients in a “natural” toothpaste that I wasn’t comfortable using (ready made product from organic shop in my home country).

Did you know that you can make your own coconut oil toothpaste with just a few simple ingredients that you have in your kitchen?

The following coconut toothpaste is a great effective alternative and is very easy to make and u can avoid all of the chemicals and toxic ingredients in commercial toothpaste and save money!!

Ingredients:
4 tablespoons coconut oil, 100% pure, cold pressed preferable organic version
2 tablespoons sodium bicarbonate
1/2 teaspoon propolis powder
5 drops clove essential oil
15 drops peppermint essential oil
a pinch of organic turmeric powder

Instructions:
1. Mix sodium bicarbonate and coconut oil in a small container, until it forms a paste like consistency
2. Add turmeric powder and propolis powder, keep mixing, the oil will become liquid because of the repetitive movements. Add the clove and peppermint oil and mix with ceramic spoon. (u can switch the essential oils with tea tree, orange…etc)
If you look into the last picture after 1 hour our homemade toothpaste turned into thinker density.
Storage in glass container.
You can make a smaller batch depending on how long you would like it to last and what size container you’re storing it in.

Ingredients To Watch Out For In Ready Made Toothpaste

All commercial toothpaste contain harmful and toxic ingredients, such as; titanium dioxide, FD&C Blue Dye # 1 & 2, sodium lauryl sulfate, and sodium fluoride. These ingredients can also be found in toothpaste that is labeled “all natural”, particularly sodium fluoride. These chemicals are not only harmful to your delicate tooth enamel, they also affect your overall health! Glycerin is another ingredient to be cautious of as it can inhibit remineralization of teeth. It is often an ingredient in fluoride-free toothpaste as well.

Propolis is also being investigated for its efficacy in the treatment of canker sores and in reducing the inflammation associated with canal debridement and endodontic procedures. Propolis have antibacterial and antifungal activity with active constituents including flavonoids like galangin and hydroxycinnamic acids like caffeic acid.

Turmeric is known for its staining prowess, it is commonly used to whiten teeth presumably it’s not in contact with the enamel long enough to change the color.
